About SCC EVENTS GmbH
SCC EVENTS is one of the largest organisers of major international endurance sports events. Its best-known events include the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON and the GENERALI Berlin Half Marathon.
With almost 50,000 participants and over a million spectators, the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON is one of the biggest marathon events in the world. To ensure that all these people don't just have to use a colourful folded map to find their way around Berlin, the existing interactive route map was completely revamped for the anniversary.
For the 50th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, bytepark created an interactive map of the marathon course and other running routes for SCC EVENTS. The editors of SCC EVENTS now have an editor tool that allows them to change the map content at their own convenience.
The concept
Interactive detail layers
The interactive map can be customised to the individual requirements and needs of the user via the menu. Participants receive detailed information about the route and the refreshment stations. Fans will find an overview of all hotspots, the most important sights along the route and particularly lively cheering points. Berlin’s residents and especially those living along the marathon route receive precise information regarding all closures and associated traffic disruptions.
Zoom sensitive
All of this is incorporated into a true-to-scale route visualisation that also supports mobile devices. In collaboration with SCC EVENTS, bytepark brought a bare map of Berlin’s city centre to life. In addition to an exact replica of the route, the bilingual (English/German) map was enriched with a wide range of information and made usable via navigation.
Depending on the target group, various filter settings are activated and only relevant route information is displayed. The level of detail of the elements displayed also varies automatically with the zoom level of the interactive map.
Mobile-ready for race day
Nothing can go wrong on the day of the big race. The runners take one last look at the map and the refreshment stations, fans plan the best route to cheer on their favourites and then it’s off onto the course.
Thanks to the fluid design, everyone can access the digital map with the interactive route at any time using a tablet or smartphone. This means you always have the route and all hotspots in view.
The map is based on open source technologies and can be flexibly expanded.
