Arbeiterwohlfahrt Berlin (AWO Berlin) is one of the largest welfare organisations in the capital and for more than 100 years has been committed to social justice and supporting people in need. With its wide range of social services, educational programmes and advice centres, AWO is an invaluable contributor to social cohesion in Berlin.

AWO Berlin is particularly committed to older people, families, children and young people as well as people in difficult circumstances. As a modern organisation, it combines tradition with innovation by actively tackling social challenges and initiating forward-looking projects. Seniorennetz Berlin is designed as a project for digital participation and offers a central point of contact that makes it easier for older people to access information, services and networking opportunities.

The goal

The goal of Seniorennetz Berlin was to offer a central point of contact, making it easier for older people to access information, services and networking opportunities. Usability, accessibility and a clear structure had to be given top priority in order to enable easy and pleasant navigation for everyone - regardless of their digital literacy.

The concept

With the relaunch of Seniorennetz Berlin, we have made an important contribution to the digital inclusion of older people. The project demonstrates how modern technology and cleverly devised design can make a lasting improvement to the quality of life for a growing target group.

Added value for the target group: The relaunch of Seniorennetz Berlin has created a platform that is not only technically impressive, but also emotionally appealing:

Simplicity: The website is easy to use - even for people with limited digital skills.
Access to important information: All bundled in one place.
Promoting community: Helping older people to communicate online and feel socially connected.

UX/UI

Based on interviews and tests conducted with the target group, our UX experts developed an intuitive user experience that, for the outset, was geared towards the needs of older people and participation.
In order to do justice to the guiding principle of the project “Be part of it!”, the focus was placed on reducing the complexity of the previous solution and putting simplicity before completeness. This resulted in the following improvements:

Generous font sizes and clear contrasts ensure good reading comfort.
Easy navigation and clear categories guide users quickly to the information they need.
Filter functions make the variety of offers easily accessible.
The friendly and colourful design is based on an inclusive approach, derived from the logo, and stands as a metaphor for connection and interaction as well as for being part of an active, open community.
The visual design is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also accessible, fulfilling the requirements of the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).
The finished implementation was submitted for testing by the target group to incorporate feedback.

The heart of the new platform is the interactive map application. It provides access to all offers. All offers can be found using the zoom function and by displaying the offers as dots on the map..

Extensive search options also allow users to search for locations and events. A full-text search and a location search as well as filters, for example for topics, districts, formats and access points, are available here.

The integration of interactive maps is based on OpenStreetMap data and MapLibre technology, allowing location-based content to be displayed in a user-friendly way..

Flexible and customisable map styles have been realised with OpenMapTiles, which fit perfectly into the design of the platform.

This technology setup not only enables an excellent user experience, but also provides a robust basis for future enhancements and customisations.

Interactive Map

The technical implementation is based on a modern and robust platform that:

features responsive design - for use on desktops, tablets and smartphones;
is powerful and secure, remaining stable even under heavy use;
has been designed for expansion so that future requirements can be easily integrated;
gives editors the freedom to conveniently manage content themselves, making life easier thanks to automated functions.
